Raise the Red Lantern (1991) is a a stunningly beautiful film set in China. This film, is well noted for its opulent visuals and sumptuous use of colours. Directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li, it is an adaption by Ni Zhen of the 1990 novel Wives and Concubines by Su Tong. Set in 1920s China, during the warlord era, the film tells the story of a 19-year-old University-educated beauty Songlian (Gong Li), who becomes 4th Mistress (3rd concubine) of a wealthy older man at his palatial feudal estate. Amongst the many awards and nominations, it won the Silver Lion for Best Director (1991) at the Venice International Film Festival. So save the date...and let's enjoy the film together !
